What Can Damage Your Hair?
You may not realise it but there are a lot of things that we do can cause a lot of damage to our hair, here are some things that you need to be wary of...
Damage can come from many different things, including:
Brushing...
Yeah, we all brush our hair everyday, but be careful, brush it only when you need to because ...
Excessive brushing causes tearing of the hair and pulls it out.
So make sure you brush it gently and if you have a lot of knots in your hair a good idea is to start from the bottom and work your way up to get rid of the knots bit by bit.
NEVER force the brush through your hair, this will be painful AND pull out a lot of hair.
AVOID brushing your hair when it is wet because it's weaker and breaks easier.
Too Much Heat...
You've heard the drill before. Keep your use of the blow dryer and the curling iron to a minimum.
Most of us at our age want our hair to look good so we use straighteners, blow dryers and hair curlers, on a daily basis. True, it's not easy leaving it natural if you're unhappy with your hair. I personally LOVE my straighteners! :) But there are other ways to get good styles without HAVING to use heat on it. Take a look on the "Styling Tips" page and see how you can use MINIMUM heat.
Oh yeah, if you MUST use heat on your hair use a heat protecting spray or serum. They aren't too expensive and it's worth it! Don't take any chances of damaging your hair.
Over Washing...
This doesn't mean you shouldn't keep clean but washing your hair too much can dry out your scalp, cause flakes, and lessen the natural oils on your head that protect your hair's roots.
Washing it every other day is fine, some people may need to wash it everyday though. This depends on whether you do sports and sweat a lot. However, if you don't think it's really that necessary to wash it everyday then don't. It's for the best!
Also, after washing your hair, use the "squeeze and press" method when you towel dry it. Your hair is vulnerable when wet and by rubbing it back and forth with the towel you are creating split ends and further damage.
Damaged Hair...
Our hair is very thin and seeing how it's damaged isn't easy with the naked eye. Here on the left is a picture of how the hair has started off and how it was affected by it being dyed and heat being used on it.
